The Pines documents the yearlong environmental sound of a forest from the continuous perspective of a single tree in central New York State. Stereo recordings collected using passive acoustic monitoring are manually analyzed and edited from 8760 hours into 4-hour-long segments, each representative of a season.
Recorded continuously from May 2021- April 2022 in Tioga County, New York.
Edited in Munich, Germany 2022-2024
Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi
Designed by Joe Gilmore

In creating and distributing this work we acknowledge, with respect, the Onondaga Nation, Firekeepers of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the sovereign nation on whose unceded lands these field recordings were made. The Onondaga Nation continues to maintain their traditions, language, and sovereign government. Because the sounds documented in these recordings are located within the ongoing Land Rights Action of the Onondaga Nation, we therefore call on listeners to reflect on this work’s relationship and responsibility to the people and ancestral lands the sites of these recordings now occupy.
